At the age of 80, the most respected and prominent specialist in Bulgaria, the doyen who devoted his entire professional life to hepatogastroenterology, and head of the Clinic for internal medicine and hepatogastroenterology at the "Sofiyamed" UMBAL; from its foundation until today, prof. Dr. Konstantin Chernev, MD

We will always remember him as a brilliant and uncompromising doctor and professional, a distinguished academician, scientist, teacher and a worthy person, respected by the entire medical and academic guild. A teacher who trained several generations of specialists from all over the country, a doctor who saved thousands of lives.

We have lost the doyen and pillar of medical academicism not only in the big family of "Sofiamed", but of the entire medical community. Bulgaria lost a truly worthy Doctor and Man. Prof. Chernev was born on March 23, 1944. He comes from a doctor's family and old Kazanlak clans. He graduated in medicine at the Medical University of Plovdiv in 1969. and began working as a resident in internal medicine in his hometown of Kazanlak.

After that, he worked as a graduate student and assistant at the Gastroenterology Clinic at ISUL and the Institute of Nutrition at BAS in Sofia. At that time he is also 3 years old. Humboldt scholarship holder at GFR, where he made 2 scientific discoveries - about the transport through the basolateral membranes of hepatocytes and the mechanism of the inhibition of mucus secretion by indomethacin in the stomach. Because of this, he was awarded a high monetary award by the Humboldt Foundation for establishing a laboratory in Bulgaria.

Then he was sent to and founded the Gastroenterology Clinic at the Medical University in Pleven. Subsequently, he was the head of the Clinic of Gastroenterology and the Department of Propaedeutics of Internal Diseases, UMBAL “Alexandrovska” .

There are two clinical specialties - internal medicine and gastroenterology.

Prof. Chernev has a doctoral dissertation and a dissertation for a doctor of medical sciences, both of which are devoted to liver pathology.

He has been a national consultant of Bulgaria in gastroenterology and internal medicine for many years.

It was also 1 year. DAAD visiting associate professor, as well as visiting associate professor in Berlin and Dresden, Germany. He specialized in institutes and hospitals and in Tübingen and Hanover, FRG. He also has a gold medal as a guest lecturer in Slovenia.

Over 250 of his scientific works have been published, of which over 50 abroad. He is the author and editor of a number of medical textbooks and monographs.

In the last 50 years, he has participated in all scientific events in internal medicine and gastroenterology in Bulgaria, in almost all European and world congresses in gastroenterology and in numerous specialized and company symposia.

Since 1983 until 2012 gives systematic lectures on gastroenterology and internal diseases.

Since 2012 until now, he has been the head of the Internal Medicine and Hepatogastroenterology Clinic since the founding of the "Sofiamed" hospital.

Prof. Chernev was the secretary of the Bulgarian Society of Gastroenterology, secretary of the Bulgarian Group on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, a member of the Committee on Medicine and Dentistry at the VAK, secretary of the Eastern European Branch of the International Academy of Sciences with headquarters in Munich – Germany, Chairman of the Scientific Council of Cytonet – Bulgaria, Honorary chairman of the group for the study and treatment of chronic viral hepatitis in Bulgaria, secretary of the scientific group for the study of GERD, member of the scientific council of the School of Economic and Health Management.

He is a member of the Bulgarian, European and world organizations of gastroenterology and endoscopy, of the European and world organizations of gastroenterology, of the European and world organizations of hepatology, the European Gastrosurgical Club, the World Transplantation Association, the European Group for the Study of Infection with helicobacter pylori, of the International Academy of Sciences based in Munich.

Prof. Chernev's main practical and scientific interests are in the entire spectrum of gastroenterology and hepatology - diagnosis and treatment of chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, lung cancer, diseases of the stomach, esophagus, pancreas, colon diseases.

In 2022 was awarded by the Bulgarian Medical Union with the "Doctor of the Year" award; in the category “Long-term activity in the field of medicine and active contribution to the development of a specialty“.
He was awarded by UMBAL "Sofiamed" with the title "Physician-Doyen".

He has leading merits for the introduction and approval of the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection, for the treatment of chronic viral hepatitis with interferon, for the introduction of the hepatitis B vaccine in Bulgaria.
