India has started construction of the world's highest tunnel. The launch ceremony of this project was presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who visited the border union territory of Ladakh.
The Shinkun La Tunnel project consists of two 4.1 km long lines which will be constructed at an altitude of about 4815 meters along the Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road to provide uninterrupted connectivity to the highland city of Leh in all weather conditions.
„Once construction is complete, it will be the tallest tunnel in the world. The Shinkun La tunnel will not only ensure the speedy and efficient movement of our military forces and equipment, but will also contribute to economic and social development in Ladakh, the Indian government said.
Currently, the tunnel in China, located at an altitude of 4750 m, is considered the highest located object of this type in the world. It became part of a 400-kilometer highway connecting the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region, Lhasa, with the city of Ningchi in the southeast of the region.
