Frequent yawning, as a rule, indicates lack of sleep, depression, anxiety or strong fatigue, but it can also be a sign of serious health problems, said neurologist Galina Nevryuzina. She told Gazeta.Ru.

about the dangerous reasons for yawning

According to Nevryuzina, if a person yawns 7 to 20 times a day, there is nothing wrong with that, but when the frequency of yawning becomes pathological, the causes may require treatment. “Frequent yawning may be a sign of disorders of the cardiovascular system in the form of a disorder of the autonomic nervous system. The list of possible problems even includes a myocardial infarction, the neurologist warned. She recommended seeing a doctor if yawning is accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, or nausea.

In addition, frequent yawning often develops against the background of temporal lobe epilepsy (a type of epilepsy that begins in the temporal lobe of the brain), Parkinson's disease and other diseases associated with brain tissue damage: tumors in the frontal lobe or the brain stem. Then the yawning is accompanied by headaches, memory and vision problems and personality changes, Nevryuzina warned.

Among the possible causes of continuous yawning, the neurologist also indicated intoxication with certain substances, the consequences of a stroke, chronic heart failure, hypothyroidism (lack of thyroid hormones), diabetes mellitus and certain neurodegenerative diseases (for example, multiple sclerosis).
