Genoa midfielder Ruslan Malinovski underwent surgery today after suffering a horrific-looking lower leg fracture during the Serie A match in Venice .
Early in the second half, Malinowski tried to clear a ball near his goal when he jammed his buttons into the grass. His right ankle twisted under him and turned the wrong way, and he fell on his own leg. Saturday's match ended in a 2-0 win for the hosts from Venice, and the Ukrainian midfielder was substituted five minutes into the second half.
The 31-year-old Ukrainian international was truly agonizing, lying on the pitch, and was immediately embraced by his goalkeeper. Other teammates rushed to him as well, and the players had their heads down and hands over their faces after seeing the severity of the injury.
He was carried out on a stretcher to the applause of the entire stadium.
„Footballer Ruslan Malinovski, who suffered an injury to his right ankle during the match with Venice, has sprained joints and a broken fibula,” Genoa said in a statement to X. “The soccer player underwent surgery at the clinic in Udine. See you soon, Ruslan!“.
