French automaker Renault has introduced an updated new-generation E-Tech hybrid transmission under the 160 index, which is designed to simultaneously increase power and reduce fuel consumption in the current Captur and Symbioz models. This engine was officially presented for the first time as part of a strategic renewal of the company's model range, which aims to make hybrid versions more attractive not only from an environmental point of view, but also in terms of dynamics, efficiency and operating costs. The technology presented is the successor to the previous generation of Renault E-Tech 145 hybrids, which debuted in 2020.

The main engineering innovation is the appearance of a new 1.8-liter gasoline engine with atmospheric charging and direct injection, which replaces the previous 1.6-liter unit. The new engine is not only more powerful, but also more efficient at low revs, which is important for a hybrid transmission, where maximum efficiency is achieved precisely in mixed or urban driving modes. It develops 109 horsepower and 172 Nm of torque, while the previous engine provided only 94 horsepower and 150 Nm. The entire E-Tech 160 system works together with a 20 hp starter-generator and a 49 hp main electric motor, providing a torque of 205 Nm. Thanks to the coordinated work of all elements, the system power of the hybrid transmission has increased from 143 to 158 horsepower.

Another significant improvement is the updated battery. Its capacity is now 1.4 kWh, which is more than the previous version (1.2 kWh). This allows the electric motor to work more efficiently in combination with the gasoline engine, providing better response to the accelerator pedal, smoother driving in city traffic and reduced fuel consumption. In addition, the entire drivetrain operates through a multi-mode automated clutchless transmission, which is a distinctive feature of Renault hybrids.

The practical characteristics demonstrate real progress. The updated Captur E-Tech 160 now accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds - 0.6 seconds faster than the previous version. At the same time, average fuel consumption has decreased from 4.8 to 4.3 liters per 100 km, which is a very decent figure for a compact crossover with a full hybrid system. Even more noticeable are the changes in the dynamics of the larger Symbioz: with the updated transmission, the acceleration time has decreased from 10.6 to 9.1 seconds - that is, by one and a half seconds. This suggests that Renault has made significant progress in balancing power, weight of the car and energy efficiency.

Renault has officially confirmed that sales of the updated Captur E-Tech 160 and Symbioz E-Tech 160 hybrids will begin in Europe in July 2025. The price of the Captur in the basic hybrid version will be 28,250 euros, while the larger and more spacious Symbioz will cost from 33,100 euros. Both models retain the classic Renault design, but at the same time offer a more modern interior and up-to-date multimedia functions that should meet the expectations of buyers in the electrified crossover segment.
