An earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale has been recorded off the coast of Kamchatka, the regional branch of the Federal Research Center for Geophysical Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported on its website.
The earthquake occurred at 6:58 a.m. local time on Friday (9:58 p.m. Bulgarian time on Thursday) in the Pacific Ocean, 93 kilometers from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The tremors have a magnitude of 7.2, with a hypocenter depth of 123 kilometers.
Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov announced a tsunami threat along the eastern coast of the peninsula. All services are on high alert, and social institutions and residential buildings are being quickly checked.
“The response plan has already been finalized and all responders are deployed within minutes. There are currently no reports of damage,“ he added.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations warned of the possibility of waves with a height of 0.1 to 1.5 meters.
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) also issued a tsunami warning for coastlines within a radius of 1,000 kilometers from the earthquake epicenter.
A wave with a height of more than 60 cm was recorded near the Semyachik volcano in Kamchatka. This was announced by Sergey Lebedev, Minister of Emergency Situations of the Kamchatka Territory, on VKontakte.
“There is no damage as a result of the earthquake of September 19“, the minister was quoted as saying in a press release from the ministry.
