French head of state Emmanuel Macron has assured his allies that if Paris sends troops to Ukraine and Russia attacks them, the intervention of NATO or US forces will not be necessary, the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal reports, citing official persons who wished to remain anonymous.
"The administration of US President Joe Biden was concerned that Russia might attack French troops if they were sent to Ukraine,”, the publication quoted a Washington representative as saying.
He added that this could lead to the involvement of France and possibly other Western countries in the conflict.
According to the paper, the prospect of Western personnel in Ukraine, both civilian and military, raises pressing questions about how allies should respond if one of them is killed in a Russian strike.
But Macron assured Washington that with this development of events, their intervention would not be necessary.
In late February, French President Emmanuel Macron said Paris would do everything to prevent Moscow from "winning this war”. According to him, Western countries have discussed the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine, but it is still not possible to reach a consensus on the matter.
Macron, who caused a political storm with his statement both at home and among his NATO allies, later noted that his words had been carefully considered. He also pointed out that Paris has no "borders and red lines” on the issue of aid to Kiev.
