< strong>The German government has allowed Ukraine to use German-supplied weapons against military targets in Russia, government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit announced today in Berlin, quoted by DPA and BTA.
In recent weeks, Ukraine has been pushing its supporters for permission to use Western-supplied weapons to strike Russian forces on Russian soil. Several countries, including the US, have already taken similar steps to give Ukraine more leeway in the use of Western-supplied weapons.
Releasing military aid, many Western countries made it a condition that Ukraine use the weapons provided to Ukraine only on Ukrainian territory. This condition was intended to avoid escalation with Russia and to prevent the direct involvement of Ukraine's allies in the conflict, DPA notes.
However, Ukraine has recently claimed that Russian forces are taking advantage of these restrictions to mass troops near the border and launch attacks against Ukrainian territory.
