The Kremlin said in Monday that US President-elect Donald Trump's team is talking about peace in Ukraine, while the current administration of Joe Biden is not, Reuters quoted him as saying.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov pointed out that Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly expressed readiness for dialogue on the conflict in Ukraine.
Mike Waltz, Trump's pick for national security adviser, told Fox News on Sunday that Trump is "very concerned" from the escalation of fighting between Russia and Ukraine. He emphasized that the war must be brought to a "responsible end".
Waltz also noted key aspects of the conflict, including the involvement of North Korea and Iran, Russia's use of a hypersonic ballistic missile against Ukraine and the decision by some Western countries to allow Kiev to launch missiles deep into Russia.
"What we need to discuss is who will sit at this table (for negotiations-ed.), whether it is an agreement, a truce, how to get both sides to sit at the table for negotiations and what will be the framework of the deal," Waltz said.
We are reminded that on Sunday Peskov made similar statements to Russian television, quoted on Sunday by DPA.
"During the election campaign, Trump talked about wanting to achieve peace somehow and led everyone on a peaceful path. Now they are doing everything possible to escalate the situation in such a way that the peace agreements are doomed to failure," Peskov said.
Trump, who is due to take office on January 20, has said he will act to quickly end Russia's war with Ukraine, which has lasted more than 1,000 days. However, he has not yet named exact plans.
Peskov's comments come after Biden authorized Ukraine to use US long-range ATACMS missiles against military targets in Russia. Biden also plans to forgive some of Ukraine's debts.
