Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant confirmed his government's commitment to liquidate the military and management capacity of the Palestinian armed group "Hamas" within any deal to end the war in the Gaza Strip, his office said, Reuters and BTA reported.
During the telephone conversation with the Secretary of State of the United States, Anthony Blinken, Gallant also "discussed the issue of identifying and creating conditions for the emergence of a local governing alternative" of the Islamist group, the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
Earlier today, Blinken held separate phone conversations with Gallant and wartime cabinet minister Benny Gantz, the State Department said, as cited by Reuters. The subject of their talks was the proposed ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.
On Sunday, an aide to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said US President Joe Biden's offer was "not a good deal," but Israel accepted it anyway.
On Friday, Biden said the new plan calls for three stages of de-escalation, which include a ceasefire, the release of hostages and prisoners, Israel's withdrawal from Palestinian territory and the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.
Despite the official position of the Israeli government, some far-right cabinet members have threatened to withdraw from the coalition.
