South Korea and the United States have expressed concern over a new treaty between Russia and North Korea. The agreement, which promises mutual military support in the event of armed aggression against any of the parties, has been defined as a significant threat to peace and stability in the region, BTA reports.

During a telephone conversation, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-jun and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken discussed the implications of the Russia-North Korea treaty. Both condemned the agreement and promised to closely monitor the development of the situation.

Seoul's Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared details of their conversation, underscoring global concern over the development.

Blinken assured South Korea of US support in response to the treaty, stressing the importance of a unified approach. Cho pointed out that any efforts to strengthen North Korea's military capabilities directly violate UN Security Council resolutions.

The United States is considering various strategies to deal with the potential threat posed by the alliance between Russia and North Korea. This includes the possibility of South Korea supplying arms to Ukraine, as South Korean National Security Adviser Chang Ho-jin has mentioned, which would mark a significant shift in response to the challenges posed by the Russia-North Korea pact.

Actions taken by South Korea and the US will be critical to maintaining regional peace and stability.
