Donald Trump's chances of winning the US presidential election have increased after his assassination attempt. This opinion was expressed by the scientific director of the Institute of the USA and Canada at the Russian Academy of Sciences, RIAC member Sergey Rogov.
„As a result of the assassination attempt, I think Trump will have an even higher approval rating. Recent polls show that Biden is sometimes catching up, but Trump's chances of winning the presidential election will most likely increase. The Republican Party convention will soon take place, where Trump will be officially nominated for president. So all of this will further strengthen the prospects for his victory in the presidential elections," adds Rogov.
Overall, according to the analyst, “the scales are still swinging”, but “so far in favor of Trump”.
According to Rogov, despite the American propaganda that presents the USA as a model of democracy, in fact “violence is regularly used in the political life of the USA”. The expert recalled that four American presidents were killed as a result of assassination attempts. “The current election campaign is taking place in the context of a rift in American society, a fierce confrontation between Republicans and Democrats. And the possibility of an attempt to assassinate candidates was considered realistically”, he noted.
Trump, as the political scientist emphasized, “caused a very strong reaction among American liberals“, which “very likely created an atmosphere for a failed assassination attempt“.
Talking about who could be behind the assassination attempt, the specialist noted that it is too early to draw conclusions. “Judging by the latest reports, Trump was shot by a young Republican, not a Democrat. You can fantasize about why he did it, but there are still no facts that really explain the reason for the assassination attempt. Apparently, more information on this issue will appear in the near future”, concluded Rogov.
