A powerful earthquake struck off the southern coast of Japan, triggering a tsunami warning, the Associated Press reports.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the earthquake registered a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 and was epicentered off the east coast of the southern main Japanese island of Kyushu at a depth of about 30 km.
It issued a tsunami warning, predicting waves of up to 1 meter along the southern coast of Kyushu and the nearby island of Shikoku.
