Britain has joined the United States in accusing Russian state media RT of carrying out works on behalf of the Kremlin in an attempt to undermine the security of other countries, reported PA Media and DPA, quoted by BTA.
The news channel, which is no longer broadcast in the UK, is a “mouthpiece for Russian disinformation” which has “mutated into an even more harmful organisation”, the Foreign Office said yesterday.
Yesterday US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said Washington was imposing further sanctions on RT, warning that it was a key part of Moscow's military machine with “cyber operational capabilities”.
The US has already accused the channel of interfering with democracy ahead of the country's November elections, but said yesterday that officials had tracked similar activity in other countries.
Among them are Argentina, France and Moldova, which goes to the polls next month.
The British Foreign Office said: “US intelligence indicates that RT is involved in information operations and covert influence around the world”. “These activities attack the democratic foundations of other countries by using intelligence operations and shadow networks to incite political violence and spread dissent around the world.“
