Rebels attacked a military base in Colombia. In the attack, two soldiers were killed and 21 others were injured, the Associated Press reported, as quoted by News.bg.

According to initial information, the group fired home-made rockets from a cargo truck parked near a base in Puerto Jordan, a small town in the Colombian province of Arauca.

Colombia's army blamed the National Liberation Army (ELN) for the attack. The country's president, Gustavo Petro, hinted that the attack could lead to the suspension or cancellation of peace talks with the rebel group. "This is an attack that effectively shuts down the peace process in blood," he stressed.

The National Liberation Army and the Colombian government had a cease-fire agreement that expired in August 2024. However, the group continues to participate in peace talks aimed at ending the more than five-decade conflict.

ELN was founded in the early 1960s by union leaders and students inspired by the Cuban Revolution. The group has around 6,000 fighters in Colombia and Venezuela and is financed through drug trafficking and illegal gold mines.
