First trilateral meeting of the Secretary-General of the UN Antonio Guterres and the leaders of the two Cypriot communities Nikos Christodoulidis and Ersin Tatar will take place today at the headquarters of the international organization in New York, BNR reported.
Announced as an informal dinner, it is symbolic of the Cyprus issue after the negotiation process was interrupted 7 years ago.
The UN chief takes the initiative for a tripartite Cyprus meeting in the midst of two wars – in Ukraine and in the Middle East, and this fact is “a strong indication of his political will and his commitment to progress on the Cyprus issue”, said President Nikos Christodoulidis. The informal dinner was scheduled after Antonio Guterres spoke separately in September in New York with President Nikos Christodoulidis and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, as well as the Prime Minister of Greece and the President of Turkey.
Before their departure, the leaders of the two Cypriot communities once again emphasized the “red“ your lines. Nikos Christodoulidis announced that with the “necessary realism” will do everything possible to make the meeting the first step towards a new round of negotiations for a federal solution. Ersin Tatar will set the position for two sovereign states and the immediate start of direct flights, trade and international contacts for Turkish Cypriots.
The informal dinner is a “positive development”, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen commented on Friday.
