The European Union may consider replacing imports of Russian liquefied natural gas with imports from the United States, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told reporters after the informal EU summit in Budapest, Reuters reported.
"We still receive large quantities of liquefied natural gas from Russia. Why not replace it with an American one, which for us is cheaper and will lower the price of energy", said Von der Leyen.
She indicated that the EU's approach to trade after Donald Trump takes office will be to seek common commitments and mutual interests and to negotiate.
Earlier this week, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen "warmly welcomed" Trump on his election victory in the USA.
As allies and friends, the EU looks forward to continuing its constructive cooperation with the US, European Council President Charles Michel added. In a statement on the social network "X" he recalled, significantly, the enduring union and historical ties between the EU and the US.
