< p>Russia attacked the Dnieper with an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) to force Ukraine to abandon further strikes with long-range weapons on its territory. This was emphasized by retired US Major General Mark McCarley to the CNN television channel.
He noted that in this way Moscow wants to show Ukraine that the next ICBM strike may be on the capital city of Kiev.
"Russia firing first on the Dnieper could be said to be a statement suggesting that if Ukraine does not abandon the use of, say, the recently delivered US ATACMS and the UK's Storm Shadow, then Russia will use an intercontinental ballistic missile with a longer range to hit Kiev”, McCarley suggested.
The retired American major general shared that he was in Kiev this morning and heard an air raid alert in the capital. He emphasized that people are scared that the city can be attacked with this type of weapon.
"The sirens eventually stopped, but there was still an influx of people in the shelters because it just creates massive fear. And this is what the Russians wanted, fear among those who live and survive, he concluded.
