The United States is using Taiwan to to provoke a serious crisis in Asia, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko said, reiterating Moscow's support for China's position on Taiwan, reports "Reuters".

"We see that Washington, in violation of the principle of "one China" which it recognizes, is intensifying military-political contacts with Taipei under the slogan of preserving the "status quo" and increasing arms supplies," Rudenko told the state news agency. .

"The aim of such obvious US interference in the affairs of the region is to provoke the PRC (People's Republic of China) and generate a crisis in Asia to satisfy its own selfish interests."

China considers Taiwan its territory, a claim the Taiwanese government rejects. The US is the most important international supporter and supplier of arms to Taiwan, despite the lack of official diplomatic recognition.

In September, President Joe Biden approved $567 million in military support for Taiwan. Russia responded that it stood shoulder to shoulder with China on Asian issues, including criticism of the US's drive to expand its influence and "deliberate attempts" to inflame the situation around Taiwan.

China and Russia announced an "unrestricted" partnership in February 2022, when President Vladimir Putin visited Beijing shortly before launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, sparking Europe's deadliest ground war since World War II.
