The commander of a special military unit in South Korea said that the country's President Yoon Suk-yeol ordered him to “take out by force” members of parliament after martial law was declared on December 3, Reuters reported, as quoted by BTA.
The order, issued as early as December 1, included preparations to block the parliament, the electoral commission and the headquarters of the opposition parties. This increased tensions in the country, leading to political crises and calls for impeachment.
Culture Minister Joo In-chon today appealed to opposition parties to withdraw calls for the removal of government officials, warning of the danger of a “government vacuum”.
At the same time, the ruling party is debating Yoon Suk-yeol's possible resignation, which could be submitted in February. If this happens, the presidential elections will take place in April or May at the earliest.
The political situation in South Korea remains unstable, and the international community is watching the events in the country with concern.
