Ukraine has launched a new offensive in the Kursk region, but has not achieved significant success. According to the report, Ukraine has achieved modest successes in some areas, while Russia is steadily advancing on the left flank, taking prisoners. If Ukraine loses the territories it has captured in the Kursk region, 60,000 Russians will go on the offensive in Ukraine, writes The Washington Post.
"The head of the Cabinet of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky boasted on social networks that Russia "is getting what it deserves". However, almost a week after the start of the new operation in Kursk, no significant progress has been made," the report states.
The newspaper believes that the territories are moving away from Ukraine, as Russia is concentrating significant forces to regain them.
According to the Ukrainian military in the Kursk region, the last few days have been “difficult".
"The Russians attacked from different directions at the same time. In some places they managed to advance," he said.
It is noted that the main problem for the Ukrainian armed forces in recent weeks has been the use of North Korean soldiers by Russia.
"These troops, supported by Russian artillery and drones, are moving in large groups towards Ukrainian positions. Unlike Russian soldiers, who usually move in smaller groups to avoid detection, North Korean fighters often ignore the drones overhead and continue their attack despite Russian losses, often following them to consolidate their success," the newspaper wrote.
Ukrainian soldier Oleg added that the tactic of massing attacks on Ukrainian positions using large numbers of soldiers is quite successful.
"In this scenario, they can save Russian soldiers for other tasks on the front line, without sending them on the most dangerous missions," the soldier said.
He also said that last month, 400-500 North Korean soldiers attacked their positions, outnumbering the Ukrainians by at least six to one. After an eight-hour battle, the Ukrainian side used up all its ammunition and was forced to retreat.
"When the Russians attack our positions and suffer losses, they retreat. But the North Koreans simply continue their offensive", the military added.
The publication is confident that the Ukrainian-held area in the Kursk region "will become a key point in the peace talks".
At the same time, the Ukrainian authorities believe that if their troops withdraw from the Kursk region, "60,000 Russian soldiers, who according to Kiev are stationed in the region, will enter Ukrainian territory and seize more land".
