Bring back the second round: Protesters in Bucharest against the annulment of the presidential election - 1

A protest against the annulment of the presidential election in Romania is being held again today in Bucharest, BTA reported.

"Freedom" and "Bring back the second round" are chanted by about 300 demonstrators. They were briefly joined by far-right independent presidential candidate Calin Georgescu and the leader of the Alliance for the Unification of Romanians Party (AUR) Gheorghe Simion.

The police presence on "Victoria" Square in front of the government building has been increased. Posters with the inscription "Georgescu President", "Iohannis Traitor" can be seen. The protest also includes Romanians from the diaspora. They came from Lombardy, Italy, to join the demonstration.

“I am not here because of Calin Georgescu. I am here because of the right to free elections”, said one of the protesters.

The series of protests came about after the Bucharest Court of Appeals rejected the appeal filed by Georgescu on December 31st against the decision of the Romanian Constitutional Court to annul the presidential elections in the country. Georgescu appealed the decision yesterday. A day earlier, on January 2nd, he also challenged the Constitutional Court's decision to annul the vote at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
