The Bundestag (lower house of the German parliament) unanimously adopted a measure to increase financial support for victims of the communist party that ruled the former German Democratic Republic (GDR), DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
According to the new law, pensions for victims will be increased from 330 to 400 euros, with the funds increasing automatically each year, without being tied to the individual needs of the beneficiaries. The bill is expected to be approved by the Bundesrat (upper house) and enter into force on July 1.
In addition to the increased pensions, victims of forced displacement in East Germany will receive significantly higher one-time compensation. Instead of the initially proposed 1,500 euros, the amount was increased to 7,500 euros.
Evelin Zupke, a representative of the victims of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, welcomed the reform, calling it "a recognition for all those who spoke out against the dictatorship". She stressed that many of the victims are still experiencing financial difficulties.
With these changes, the German government aims to provide better support and justice for people who suffered from the communist regime in the GDR.
