The Chinese army is building the world's largest military command center southwest of Beijing. The complex will be ten times larger than the US Pentagon and will also have bunkers for senior officials, the Financial Times reports, citing information from satellite images of the Chinese military and statements from intelligence sources.
„Satellite images show a construction site covering about 1,500 acres (over 6 square kilometers) 30 kilometers southwest of Beijing with deep pits that military experts believe will house large fortified bunkers to protect Chinese military leaders during any conflict, including a potential nuclear war,“ the publication writes.
According to the US military, "the intelligence community is closely monitoring the facility", which will be "the largest military command center in the world, 10 times the size of the Pentagon". Military analysts have dubbed the facility “Beijing’s Military City.”
Based on an assessment of satellite imagery obtained by the publication, it is reported that major construction began in mid-2024. There was reportedly no visible military presence at the site at the time, but there were signs warning of drone flights or photography.
“If confirmed, it would signal Beijing’s intent to build not only world-class conventional forces but also advanced nuclear warfare capabilities,” said Don Wilder, former head of China Analysis.
