Volkswagen Passat sedan returns to global market

The car is larger and more powerful, but will not be available in Europe

Volkswagen has announced the return of its iconic Passat sedan to the global market. The new model, designated the Passat B9, is no longer exclusive to certain regions, and will begin its global expansion from the Middle East and Central Asia.

From station wagon in Europe to global sedan

Currently, the new Volkswagen Passat B9 is only available in the European Union, but only in the station wagon version. The sedan version, which is significantly more popular in other markets, was previously only available in China, where it is sold under the name VW Magotan at a price starting at $25,000.

Now, Volkswagen's official website has announced that the model will go "global". The first regions to receive it are the Middle East (along with the smaller VW Sagitar model) and soon after, the markets in Central Asia. The first export batch for the Middle East will include 554 cars.

The new four-door Volkswagen Passat B9 is significantly larger than its predecessor, the Passat B8, with its length now reaching almost 5 meters. The design of the sedan has become more elegant and sophisticated, meeting modern business class standards.

In terms of the interior, the model is focused on digitalization and spaciousness: Three screens are installed on the front panel, which emphasizes the technological leap forward. The cabin is more spacious than that of the Passat B8. The trunk volume is an impressive 520 liters.

Engines and transmission

The new Volkswagen Passat sedan is produced in China, and it will be available with two turbocharged gasoline engine options:
A 1.5-liter engine with 160 horsepower.
A 2.0-liter engine with up to 220 horsepower.

Both modifications of the sedan are equipped with a 7-speed DSG robotic dual-clutch gearbox, guaranteeing fast and smooth gear shifting.

The return of the Passat sedan to the world stage signals Volkswagen's continued interest in the segment of classic four-door cars, but unfortunately for some - outside of Europe.
