This Mercedes W124 with 1.6 million kilometers is looking for a new owner

The legendary diesel 300D refuses to retire and continues to serve faithfully

In the world of modern automotive engineering, where planned obsolescence often shortens the life of machines, a legend from Stuttgart recalls the times when cars were made to outlive their owners. A 1991 Mercedes-Benz W124 was put up for auction in the United States, which literally changed the game – its mileage was reset back in 2017, after reaching the incredible mark of one million miles (over 1.6 million kilometers).

This particular example, a 300D model, has spent three decades in the same hands in the state of Tennessee. Purchased back in 1991 for a solid $41,400, the car had all the extras for its era - air conditioning, cruise control, electric seats and the classic Becker radio. Under the hood, the "iron heart" of the German brand pulses: a 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbodiesel with 122 hp. This unit, working in tandem with a 4-speed automatic transmission, has long been canonized as one of the most durable engines ever created by human hands.

Although the bodywork shows signs of time - here and there peeling paint, light rust on the fenders and a tired front bumper - the interior surprises with a decent condition. Only the worn driver's seat reveals that this car has been lived in and traveled for three reincarnations. Of course, such a distance is not covered by just “filling in diesel“. Over the years, the turbine, subframes and water pump have been replaced, but the main unit remains original and in combat readiness.

Although 1.6 million kilometers may sound cosmic, for W124 fans this is simply a well-developed engine. History knows examples of this model that have reached a mind-boggling 3.4 million kilometers. This auction at Cars and Bids is further proof that when engineering thought is not constrained by marketing gimmicks, the result is eternity on four wheels.
