Volkswagen announced that it will stop supplying cars to the United States because of Trump's tariffs. On April 3, 2025, the US president ordered the introduction of 25 percent protective duties on imports of cars, trucks and auto parts. According to the head of state, the supply of cars and components for them threatens the country's national security.
Volkswagen supplies cars to the United States from Mexico. The German brand imports the Tiguan and Taos crossovers, as well as the Jetta sedan. Following Trump's order, the basic duties on products imported from Mexico and Canada increased by 25 percent. For EU countries, the rate has increased by 20 percent, for China - by 34.
It is the increase in tariffs that leads to this radical measure by Volkswagen, which will subsequently lead to a sharp increase in the prices of Volkswagen cars on the North American market. The German concern said that it would include all costs arising from a 25 percent tariff in the final price of the cars.
At the end of March, the prices of Ferrari and Porsche cars also rose sharply in the US. Premium brands adjusted the prices of their cars in response to Donald Trump's tariffs.
