The European Union's energy market is not functioning well and lower energy prices are needed in Europe. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said this upon his arrival at an informal summit of European leaders in Belgium.
„It is absolutely clear that the European Union's energy market is not functioning well at the moment. We need closer integration of the energy market to ultimately reduce energy prices in Europe for both European consumers and European businesses,” Mitsotakis said.
He noted that “Greece is preparing to participate in the discussions with a number of concrete proposals to reduce European bureaucracy, improve the functioning of the single market and ensure that competitiveness ultimately benefits both businesses and European consumers.”
“Competitiveness in itself is a rather abstract concept unless it is combined with the creation of more jobs with better wages and, above all, lower prices on the European market to combat the high-cost crisis,” Mitsotakis explained. “If this does not happen, it will be difficult to get the necessary public support to take important decisions.” “Now we will have the opportunity to focus more on energy market issues“, the head of government emphasized.
