I know that the topic of kindergartens is one of the most sensitive – every parent wants security, peace of mind and predictability when it comes to their child. And this is completely understandable. The municipality is one of the largest investors in the educational infrastructure, but I must say clearly – we are not where we want to be. We have a plan and the will for this to change. The goal is clear – every child in Sofia should have a safe place in a kindergarten, close to their home,“ said the mayor of Sofia Vasil Terziev at the start of the construction of the new kindergarten in the „Druzhba“ district, Iskar district.
Today, the construction of a new kindergarten building began in the „Druzhba“ district, Iskar district. The site has been approved for financing under the Program for the Construction, Extension, Upgrade and Reconstruction of Nurseries, Kindergartens and Schools 2024-2027 of the Ministry of Education and Science (MES). It is financed by the MES and the Sofia Municipality, with the total cost of the project being about 10.2 million leva, and the implementation period - 720 days. The kindergarten should be completed by September 2027.
New kindergarten in the „Iskar“ district
The new building will be for 10 groups - eight kindergartens and two nurseries. It will have: a sports and music hall, an art hall, activity rooms, as well as a swimming pool, a courtyard with playgrounds and a sports area.
The building is designed on two above-ground levels, with a one-story area for the pool. South of the building will be a spacious courtyard with 10 playgrounds - one for each group, a nature corner and paved alleys. A parking lot with 9 parking spaces and two bicycle parking lots with a total of 31 spaces is also planned.
Investments in new kindergartens
Since the beginning of the mandate, 20 new kindergarten buildings have been opened in Sofia, nine of them in 2025. At the same time, another 15 new buildings are being built, including two independent nurseries in the areas of “Triaditsa“ and “Lozenets“. Construction activities are underway in the regions of „Oborishte“, „Vitosha“, „Vrabnitsa“, „Pancharevo“, „Sredets“, „Slatina“, „Iskar“, „Krasna Polyana“ and „Novi Iskar“.
The construction of another 7 new buildings is pending in „Serdika“, „Kremikovtsi“, „Triaditsa“, „Ilinden“ and „Ovcha Kupel“, and projects for other regions are being prepared in parallel.
In the construction of the new buildings, the Sofia Municipality places emphasis on: energy efficiency and sustainability; opportunities for sports and play, an accessible and modern environment with spacious yards with landscaping.
„The development of kindergartens is among the main priorities of the Sofia Municipality. That is why we are actively working to build new buildings and improve conditions,“ also pointed out Mayor Vasil Terziev.
In order to continue developing quality education for children, Vasil Terziev's team launched a survey of parents to take into account their expectations and attitudes related to childcare facilities and child care.
