Nikolay Vassilev: We are currently in a budget quagmire - we are supposedly adopting a budget with a 3% deficit, but in fact we are starting with 5%

Whether the state will take out 2 billion leva in cash or assets to buy a refinery is mathematically the same. I am against it, the former Minister of Economy commented on the Lukoil case

Legal Budget 2026 has not been withdrawn, it is on pause for revision. The talks continue and we are behind schedule. This was stated to bTV by the former Minister of Economy Nikolay Vassilev, quoted by novini.bg.

"We are currently in a budget quagmire - we are supposedly adopting a budget with a 3% deficit, but in fact we are starting with 5 and finishing with 8%."

"Let's stop with budgets with deficits and return to budgets with surpluses", he urged.

"Our money is being poured "into the desert", it is being spent inappropriately."

Vassilev supports the employers because they were the first to leave the Tripartite, as well as their ideas - no increase in social security contributions and no increase in the "dividend" tax.

And he hopes to bring about major optimizations and reforms in the public sector.

According to him, nothing prevents politicians from going out and laying off 10,000 people from the state administration today.

Whether the state will take out 2 billion leva in cash or assets to buy a refinery is mathematically the same. I am against it."

And he showed on a blank white sheet all the "successful" state-owned companies given concessions.
