NSI Chief: The difference between the population counted in 2021 and the people eligible to vote now could be over 1 million

Inflation has been relatively stable in recent months. Prices changed by an average of 5% in December 2025 compared to December 2024.

The census was conducted on September 7, 2021, which means that 4 and a half years will pass until the elections. Since then, about half a million people have died. That is, instead of clearing the voter lists, there will be half a million dead. Assoc. Prof. Atanas Atanasov, Chairman of the NSI, stated this to bTV, explaining why census data should not be used for the voter lists.

„The difference between the population counted in 2021 and the actual people eligible to vote in the upcoming elections could be over 1 million. There are foreigners in our country who are counted by us, but do not have the right to vote“, he pointed out.

Atanasov hopes that common sense among the deputies will prevail.

„Inflation has been relatively stable in recent months. With an average of 5%, prices changed in December 2025 compared to December 2024. We celebrated many things in December, it is normal to have different prices for entertainment and travel“, he added.

„On February 3, we will publish a preliminary estimate of inflation in January – flash inflation, together with other members of the eurozone. The deviations are very small between the preliminary and final inflation“, Atanasov also emphasized.
