The University of Library Science and Information Technology (UniBIT) was presented at IEEE Quantum Week 2025 - the largest global event for quantum sciences and technologies, which was held in the state of New Mexico, USA.
The conference, known as the IEEE International Conference on Quantum Computing and Engineering (QCE25), is organized annually and brings together nearly 2,000 participants from all continents.
A unique international event, IEEE Quantum Week is a multidisciplinary platform that unites scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, developers, teachers, programmers and students. The forum is distinguished by an approach that goes beyond the framework of purely academic or business conferences, building a bridge between the science of quantum technologies and the developing industry. The program of QCE25 was extremely rich: 80+ exhibitors, sponsors and partners – leading companies, startups and research laboratories; 9 world-renowned speakers, including scientists and visionaries in the quantum industry; 37 training seminars for building personnel and skills; 41 workshops aimed at building professional and academic communities; 261 technical reports and 146 posters presenting the latest research; 13 panels with experts and 3 Birds-of-a-Feather sessions stimulating the informal exchange of ideas; a career forum and a mentoring program for students, which provided the opportunity to meet with representatives of leading organizations.
The doctoral student from the Department of “Computer Science“ of UniBIT, Mariyana Filipova, took part in the event as the only representative of Bulgaria. In addition, she was also selected for an organizational role in the four-member Student Committee of IEEE Quantum Week 2025 together with PhD students from Keio University in Japan, Del Valle University in Columbia and Oxford University in the UK.
This prestigious position allowed Filipova to actively contribute to building the educational profile of the forum by presenting UniBIT and Bulgaria to the international community. As part of the program, Mariyana Filipova visited the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where she participated in a special workshop for teachers.
The state of New Mexico has set itself the ambitious goal of becoming the “Quantum State of the USA“ in the coming years, combining academic resources, industrial initiatives and educational programs. Significance for Bulgaria.
Quantum solutions are taught at UniBIT in the bachelor's and master's programs in the “Computer Science“ department.
“IEEE Quantum Week is a unique opportunity not only for scientific and academic exchange, but also for building new international partnerships. Bulgaria's participation in such a large-scale forum opens doors for future collaborations and puts our country on the map of the global quantum community“ shared Filipova.
According to a McKinsey report, the global quantum sector is expected to reach hundreds of billions of dollars in the coming decades. This turns conferences like IEEE Quantum Week into strategic events that not only set the direction of development, but also create new opportunities for young scientists and universities around the world.
