Borisov/Peevski's repressive machine has been thrown to crush political opponents of this already officialized duo that governs Bulgaria. It is obvious that mayors and other opposition politicians are being persecuted according to a list. No matter how you look at it, the case of the arrest of the mayor of Varna is a particularly striking example of the line of political repression that Borisov/Peevski are carrying out. This is also an emblematic expression of the destruction of the rule of law in Bulgaria, with the kind cooperation of many actors from the prosecutor's office and the court.

This case illustrates something else for anyone with a head on their shoulders. The Bulgarian judicial system is generally overwhelmed and possessed by the status quo of endemic corruption in the country. We have reached a point where the arbitrary application of the criminal law has become an everyday occurrence. Such a situation is incompatible with what we call a "rule of law"...but why even talk about a "rule of law"? It is simply a complete form of slander and cynicism to talk about a "rule of law" in such a reality.

We have also reached a point where the word "independence" of the court is emptied of content. Where law enforcement agencies do not notice the mega corruption that is happening before everyone's eyes, for years, every day. They do not react to publicly known cases of flagrant crimes that are in front of everyone's eyes, but they are ready to invent facts and trample on the law when they need to crucify with four horses those who threaten the prevailing status quo of widespread corruption in the country.

We have come this far, the prosecutor's office choosing a court that is convenient for it. And "good faith" judges writing filthy nonsense to justify the arbitrary application of the criminal law. Trying through nine ravines to explain that the court is not competent to check its own competence! Shame and disgrace for them! No matter how "good faith" they are. I see no point in defending the "independence" of such judges.

I no longer know if there is a way out of this endless spiral of the breakdown of legality, law and the rule of law in Bulgaria. From the decomposition of so many otherwise meaningful lawyers who cannot withstand the endless "relativity" of the Bulgarian legal reality.

However, I know that those of us who have chosen law as our calling, meaning and life path, and who have not lost our basic instincts about what is law and what is not, what is good and what is not, what is justice and what is not, have a simple choice. Either fight against this pervasive degradation of corruption and conformism in the legal profession in Bulgaria, no matter how difficult it is and whatever it costs us, or give up on law as a profession...otherwise it would mean that somewhere along the way we have lost ourselves.
