Luciano Spalletti leaves national team disappointed

Coach leads Italy to 2-0 home win over Moldova in final match in charge of the Azzurri

Coach Luciano Spalletti led Italy to a 2-0 home win over Moldova in his final match in charge of the "azzurri", BTA reported.

The coach of the four-time world champions was fired after the 0-3 defeat against Norway four days ago. The specialist admitted that he made mistakes while working in the Italian team.

"I am disappointed with the result, we did not play well. I was given the opportunity to work, I tried, I made mistakes and even tried some experiments. I am trying to learn everything and what approach to choose. I am not convinced that I am the smartest. I failed to get the best out of these players and that has to be taken into account," Spalletti told the media.

He announced his own dismissal on the eve of the match against Moldova. The specialist had been in charge for less than two years and had a disappointing performance at Euro 2024. The coach admitted that he had failed to improve things.

"If you agree to be the coach of the national team, as I did, then you have to find a solution. You can't hide behind the fact that you have few players. I did badly and in some ways the decision was right. I didn't resign earlier because I think I can do better. I am leaving the national team as I found it," Luciano Spalletti added.

He was asked if he had any advice for his potential successor.

"I tried to shake things up a bit when I arrived, but then maybe it got worse. You only realise whether you did the right thing or not later. I worked hard, I tried to change the situation. I wish the federation and the new coach who will arrive all the best," Spalletti concluded.
