Our girls started their participation in the European Basketball Championship in Division "B" in Lithuania with a victory, BTA reports. Our girls defeated Denmark 73:72 in their first match from Group D with a three-pointer in the last second.
Our girls started with great desire and through Silvia Milenova, Albena Sokolova and Elena Georgieva they finished the first half 24:22. In the second period, the Bulgarians led by 4 points twice, but Denmark took the lead after 34:30 through Elisa Gurkan-Douglas and Elia Fisher. The Bulgarian basketball team did not give up and regained the lead for 39:36 at the end of the first half after successful actions by Albena Sokolova, Elena Georgieva and Maria Tsoneva.
After the break, the Danes made a series of 18:6 to lead by 54:45. Bulgaria responded through Ina Dimova and Ivayla Bakalova to reduce its deficit to 53:54. A basket by Ella Fisher made it 56:53 in favor of Denmark after 30 minutes of play.
In the last quarter, the Danish team pulled back by 5 points, but the young Bulgarians continued to fight and regained the lead for 67:66 with the help of Maria Tsoneva and Vanessa Kokalova. The opponent again led for 72:67 after Caroline Reumert and Alberte Finderup were accurate. However, this did not stop the girls from the Bulgarian national team, who snatched the victory with 6 consecutive points by Ivayla Bakalova, including a three-pointer at the siren, which brought the final score 73:72.
Albena Sokolova finished with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists for Bulgaria, while Maria Tsoneva added 14 points and 8 rebounds. Maya Madsen was the best for Denmark and formed a "double-double" - 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The next match of the national team under 18 is tomorrow at 15:30 against Croatia.
