UN Secretary-General: Multipolarity without international institutions poses its own risks

The UN must not only defend itself, but also strengthen it

The lack of strong international institutions poses a risk to the multipolar world, as seen in the First World War, said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

„We are moving towards a multipolar world. Without strong international institutions, however, multipolarity is fraught with risks, as Europe learned in the First World War, he said in his speech to the General Assembly on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the world organization.

Guterres noted that to meet these challenges, it is necessary “not only to defend the UN, but also to strengthen it“, by updating the foundations of international cooperation and ensuring support for people around the world.

The UN began its work in 1945. On June 26 of that year, at a conference in San Francisco, representatives of 50 countries signed the UN Charter. The document entered into force on October 24, which has since been celebrated as UN Day.
