Official: Slovakia accepts the existence of only two sexes

The president signs a change to the constitution

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini signed today the change to the constitution, which accepted that there are only two sexes, the Slovak news agency TASR reported, quoted by BTA.

The head of state said that at a time of "huge division in society" the gathering of a constitutional majority in parliament is an important signal that an understanding has been reached on this specific issue despite political differences.

The constitutional amendment accepted that there are only two sexes - male and female. The constitutional regulation of social rights was also expanded. The status of the family and the rights of parents were consolidated. Surrogacy was banned.

"The Constitution of the Slovak Republic also strengthened guarantees for equal pay for men and women for work performed," President Pellegrini's office stressed.

The new constitutional text states that Slovakia has sovereignty over fundamental cultural and ethical issues, "regarding the protection of life and human dignity, private and family life, marriage, parenthood and the family, culture and language, as well as related issues, especially in the areas of healthcare, upbringing and education.".

The constitutional change was adopted by the Slovak parliament on Friday, with 90 out of 150 deputies voting in favor. It will enter into force on November 1.
