Poland will not comply with Zelensky's request to close the Baltic Sea due to Russia's shadowy fleet

The situation there is worrying, but such a decision would have social and economic consequences, President Nawrocki said

Poland does not intend to comply with Volodymyr Zelensky's requests or raise the issue of closing the Baltic Sea due to Moscow's so-called “shadow fleet“, Polish President Karol Nawrocki said in an interview with Zet Radio.

“Such decisions are not made based on Zelensky's words, because they will have concrete social and economic consequences. However, our security comes first. "What is happening in the Baltic Sea is certainly a cause for concern," he said.

Politically, consultations with the military are necessary before considering the idea of closing the Baltic Sea.

"I am monitoring the situation in the Baltic Sea together with the presidents of the Baltic states, as well as with the National Security Bureau," concluded Nawrocki.

In mid-September, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said that Germany or NATO could create a special maritime zone in the North Sea to control the passage of older vessels in the Baltic Sea.

In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin told the plenary session of SPIEF that attempts to attack the so-called "shadow fleet" will affect world hydrocarbon prices.

In May, Russia's permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, called the actions of EU countries to forcibly stop civilian vessels, taken under the pretext of combating the “shadow fleet”, a gross violation of freedom of navigation.
