The United States Supreme Court has rejected an attempt to overturn same-sex marriage, BNR reported.
The request was made by a Kentucky civil servant, who asked the nine judges to review a 2015 court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.
The plaintiff was sued by a gay couple after they consistently refused to issue marriage certificates, despite the couples' constitutional right to do so. Kim Davis motivated her refusal by claiming that same-sex marriage contradicts her religious beliefs. And her right to free exercise of religion was enshrined in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which protected her from liability in the case.
However, both the Supreme Court and the lower courts did not accept her arguments, and Davis was ordered to pay over $360,000 in damages and legal costs.
