Trump cuts coffee tariffs, sues BBC, won't return Biden portrait to White House

The US president's tariffs have led to a rise in retail prices of the tonic drink in the country by nearly 21%

US President Donald Trump has announced his intention to reduce import tariffs on coffee due to rising prices.

“We're going to reduce some tariffs and more coffee will come into the country“, he said in an interview with Fox News, discussing rising food prices.

Earlier, CNN reported that Trump's import tariffs have led to a rise in retail prices of coffee in the country by nearly 21% on an annual basis. According to the National Coffee Association, the US imports more than 99% of the coffee consumed in the country. The largest sources of coffee beans come from Brazil (over 30%), Colombia (18.3%) and Vietnam (6.6%).

Trump said he would have to file a defamation lawsuit against the British media corporation BBC, claiming that it distorted the content of his statements by editing them.

“I think they would have to. Why not? They misled the public and they admitted it. I think they should. Because you can't let people do that. It was very unfair“, emphasized the US president, referring to the actions of BBC journalists.

The BBC reported earlier this week that Trump had threatened to sue it for $1 billion if it did not remove the broadcast with the edited statements of the American leader by November 14. The case concerns a one-hour Panorama broadcast by the BBC in October 2024. In it, Trump's speech was edited to suggest that he was calling for the capture of the Capitol, when in fact he was talking about the need to express civil positions through peaceful means.

Immediately after the edited portion, the BBC showed footage of people marching towards the Capitol, giving the impression that they were following Trump's call. In fact, this footage was filmed before Trump began his speech at a rally with thousands of supporters in Washington. As a result of this scandal, the media's chief executive Tim Davey and head of news Deborah Turnes resigned. Leader Samir Shan publicly apologized for this “mistake”.

On January 6, 2021, supporters of then-President Trump stormed the Capitol to prevent the recognition of the results of the November 2020 presidential election, won by Joe Biden. During the riots inside the building, police shot a protester, and a Capitol Police officer died after the clashes.

Donald Trump announced that he does not intend to return the portrait of his predecessor Joe Biden to the White House and intends to keep a picture of a pen in its place – an automatic device used to sign documents.

“I don't think so”, he said in a Fox News interview, when asked if he planned to replace the pen with a portrait of Biden.

In September 2025, Trump aide Margot Martin posted a video showing the official portraits of the heads of the US administration in the West Wing of the White House. Between the portraits of the current leader, who was president of the United States from 2017 to 2021, is a framed photo of a pen used by his aides to automatically sign Biden on a piece of paper.

In July, the White House launched its own investigation into Biden's use of a pen to sign documents. Biden admitted in an interview with The New York Times that a pen was used to sign pardons on his behalf. However, he said that all pardon decisions were made personally by him and that he had to resort to automatic signing due to the large number of documents.

On June 5, Trump ordered an investigation into his predecessor's health during his administration, as well as the use of the pen in question. Trump had previously said that Biden's executive orders pardoning approximately 2,500 people, including his relatives, were invalid because they were signed with the pen without the former president's knowledge.
