One of the most controversial issues in the initial American plan to end the war in Ukraine was the condition that Kiev officially renounce NATO membership, which is enshrined in the country's constitution, News.bg reports.
According to a CNN source, at a meeting in Florida on Sunday, representatives of the US and Ukraine discussed an option in which the ban on membership in the Alliance would be agreed directly between Russia and NATO member states, without the participation of Kiev. "Ukraine will not be legally forced to abandon this aspiration," the source said.
"If the United States concludes bilateral agreements with Russia or if the Kremlin seeks some guarantees from NATO on a multilateral basis, this does not mean that Ukraine will participate in the decision-making process," he added.
A final decision on this delicate compromise has not yet been made and will have to be discussed with the Ukrainian president. CNN notes that as the US-Ukraine negotiations continue and ahead of the trip of special envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow, "creative solutions to circumvent Kiev's red lines" are being sought.
Another unresolved red line for the Kremlin is the demand to hand over the entire territory of Donbas. Discussions on this issue are ongoing, the source said.
