After gas stations on the Greek island of Lesbos were closed today in protest against the government-imposed cap on commercial profits on fuels, their colleagues on the island of Limnos will also stop working tomorrow, the Greek state television ERT reported, quoted by BTA.

According to gas station owners on the two islands, the profit cap of 12 euro cents per liter does not ensure the profitability of their facilities. They insist that the limit be increased to at least 20 euro cents.

Queues of cars began to form at gas stations yesterday, and the price of regular unleaded gasoline was about 2 euros per liter.

Yesterday, at an extraordinary general meeting, the Federation of Gas Station Owners in Greece said that the imposed profit cap “makes petrol stations unviable”, Sky TV reported. It was unanimously decided to start preparations for protests, which will be announced depending on a meeting scheduled for today with Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos.

The Greek government has introduced restrictions on commercial profits on fuels and essential goods as a measure to combat price increases due to the crisis in the Middle East and the related disruptions on world markets.
