Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has sharply criticized the announced ceasefire between the United States and Iran, calling it a strategic failure for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Agence France-Presse reported, BTA reported.

Lapid accused Netanyahu of failing to achieve the country's goals in the war against Iran.

"We have never experienced such a political catastrophe in our entire history," Yair Lapid wrote on the social network "Ex".

According to him, Israel was not even part of the consultations when making a decision regarding its own national security.

"The army achieved everything that was asked of it, and the population showed remarkable resilience. However, Netanyahu failed politically and strategically and failed to achieve any of the goals he set for himself," Lapid said.

US President Donald Trump said he had agreed to suspend "bombings and attacks on Iran for a period of two weeks," Reuters reported.

Trump said he had spoken to leaders from Pakistan after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif asked his US counterpart to extend the deadline imposed on Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz by two weeks.

The British newspaper "The Guardian" supports the topic of Trump's deviation with the leading headline "Desperate search for any way out", under which it tracks the reactions at the highest levels of US politics to the truce reached by Trump. Political leaders and many Americans breathed a sigh of relief on Tuesday night after Donald Trump announced a temporary ceasefire agreement after threats to destroy Iran's "entire civilization," the newspaper said, noting that the agreement was announced about 90 minutes before Trump's deadline.

"I'm glad Trump backed down - he was desperate for some way out of the situation he created with his ridiculous rant," said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, quoted by the "Guardian". Schumer had previously called Trump "an extremely sick man" who was waging a "senseless war of his own choosing".
