Germany remains one of the countries in Europe with the highest fuel prices. After the government introduced a rule in the country that gasoline prices can only be increased once a day - at 12 noon, the necessary relief for drivers was not achieved. So the cabinet announced more measures on Monday, NOVA reported.

On Tuesday morning in Germany, prices averaged 2.15 euros for A95 gasoline and 2.35 euros for diesel. Since April 1, the country has had a rule - prices can only be increased once a day, at 12 noon. However, they can decrease throughout the day. With this measure, the government hoped to ease the burden on drivers, but in practice this did not happen - prices remain high.

The new measures, which were announced at a special press conference, provide for a reduction in the energy tax by 17 euro cents per liter for gasoline and diesel for a period of two months. When exactly the measure will come into effect is still not entirely clear, as legislative changes are needed. This is expected to happen in May. The government hopes that this step will ease the burden on both drivers and businesses. The measure will cost the state about 1.6 billion euros.

The reactions were not long in coming. The opposition “Alternative for Germany“ described the measures as insufficient and belated. The “Greens“ also criticized them. They recall that in 2022, when a similar measure was introduced, it turned out to be an “expensive gift” for oil companies, but not for end users.
