The EU Ambassador to Baku, Mariyana Kuyundzic, was summoned to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry and handed over a protest note regarding the resolution “In Support of Democratic Sustainability in Armenia“ adopted yesterday by the European Parliament. This was reported by the press service of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.

“During the meeting, the unfounded and biased provisions against our country contained in the resolution adopted by the European Parliament on April 30 were strongly condemned and the ambassador was handed a protest note in this regard“, the statement said.

The Foreign Ministry stressed that the provisions of the resolution “distort reality, contradict the principles of objectivity and contradict the obligations to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states“. It was noted that the European Parliament's approach has a negative impact on the normalization process in the region, as well as on the prospects for relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union, the statement added.

The Ambassador was informed that the allegations in the resolution regarding the return of Armenians to the Karabakh region are “completely unfounded and such calls constitute interference in the internal affairs of Azerbaijan“. It was also noted that despite the reintegration plan presented by Baku in 2023, “Armenian residents have left the region voluntarily and allegations to the contrary are false“.

In addition, the meeting noted the “legal inadmissibility“ of calls for the release of the former leaders of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, who have been sentenced by the Baku Military Court to various sentences, including life imprisonment. It was emphasized that “the convicted individuals committed a number of serious crimes, including terrorism, sabotage and war crimes“. “At the meeting, the EU representative was told to refrain from such steps that would harm Azerbaijan-EU relations, as well as the peace and normalization process in the region“, the report said. Earlier, the Azerbaijani news agency Trend, citing a source, reported that Baku may decide to sever relations with the European Parliament in response to the resolution.
