Organization of Islamic Cooperation condemns "genocide in Gaza"

Resolution calls for sanctions against Israel

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has again criticized the "genocide in Gaza" and called on its 57 member countries to impose sanctions on Israel, reported France Press, quoted by BTA.

In a resolution adopted yesterday at the end of a two-day summit in the Gambian capital Banjul, the organization called on its members to "exert diplomatic, political and legal pressure" and to impose on Israel "sanctions at all levels - economic, sports, cultural and international".

The OIC also calls for an "immediate, permanent and unconditional ceasefire".

In its final communiqué, the OIC also called for "the end of the export of weapons and ammunition used to commit the crime of genocide in Gaza", but did not provide details.

Only a handful of African heads of state arrived in Banjul for the 15th summit. Most of the presidents of the countries sent their representatives.

Founded in 1969, the organization aims to strengthen Muslim solidarity, support the Palestinian struggle and protect Muslim holy places.

In November last year, the OIC participated in a joint summit with the Arab League in the Saudi capital, Riyadh. Participants condemned the actions of Israeli forces in Gaza, but refrained from announcing punitive economic and political measures against Israel. The meeting at the time highlighted regional divisions over the response to the conflict amid fears it could escalate.

This weekend, international attention was focused more on Cairo, where a meeting to discuss a ceasefire plan related to the release of hostages in the Gaza Strip ended yesterday. However, it ended without concrete progress, as both Israel and "Hamas" remain steadfast in their positions.
