A British Air Force pilot has died after a Spitfire plane (Spitfire) crashed last night in a field in eastern England, the British police and the Air Force said, quoted by Reuters and BTA.

The fighter jet was part of a commemorative ceremony for the Battle of Britain in World War II at an air force base in Lincolnshire, reports the "Guardian" newspaper.

"It is terrible news that the life of a serving Royal Air Force pilot has been cut short in this tragic event. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones," Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on social media.

The unidentified pilot was the only person on the plane and was pronounced dead at the scene, Lincolnshire Police said in a statement.

Local police also said they do not believe there were any other injuries as a result of the incident and that the investigation into the cause is ongoing.

The Air Force statement said: "It is with great sadness that we have to confirm the death of a Royal Air Force pilot in a tragic incident near Coningsby Air Force Base. (Coningsby) today".

"The pilot's family has been informed and we ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult time,", the statement added.
