More than 20 civilians were killed in an attack in central Mali, Reuters reported, citing a local government official.

The attack was carried out against a village in the Mopti region - one of seven regions in central and northern Mali where jihadist groups linked to "Al Qaeda" and "Islamic State", have been rebelling since 2012.

The mayor of the village said that unidentified armed men attacked villagers who were returning from work in the fields.

"Yesterday we recorded 19 deaths, but today there are more than 20," he said by phone.

The insurgency in Mali began during the 2012 Tuareg uprising. Rebellions have since spread throughout the Sahel and the northern coastal countries of West Africa. The authorities' failure to protect civilians has led to two coups in Mali, one in neighboring Burkina Faso and one in Niger since 2020.
