An unspecified number of people were killed in an Israeli airstrike in the vicinity of the Syrian city of Aleppo on Sunday, reported Reuters, cited by BTA, citing Syrian state media citing a military source.

This is the second Israeli strike against Syria in less than a week.

The airstrike, which took place at lunchtime on Sunday, resulted in “a number of casualties and some material damage”, the source said, without giving further details.

According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Israeli missiles hit positions of a pro-Iranian armed group in the Hayyan area north of Aleppo, DPA reported.

On May 29, Israel carried out airstrikes in central Syria and the coastal town of Banias, killing one child and injuring ten civilians, according to Syrian state media. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, three Hezbollah fighters were also killed in the attacks.

For years, Israel has been conducting airstrikes against what it says are Iranian-linked sites in Syria.

In April, Iran retaliated with a missile attack on Israel after a suspected Israeli strike destroyed a building in the Iranian embassy compound in Damascus and killed several Iranian officers, including a high-ranking general.
