The absence of the UN Secretary General Antoniou Guterres from the upcoming summit on Ukraine in Switzerland is the “freshest“ a signal that the event will become nothing more than a political formality. Senator Alexei Pushkov expressed this opinion in his Telegram channel.
On Friday, UN Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric's official representative told a briefing that Guterres would not go to the Swiss conference on Ukraine. As reported by a source of RIA Novosti at the UN, the organization will be represented at the event as an observer and the final document of the meeting is not expected to be signed on its behalf.
„ UN Secretary General Guterres decided not to participate in the conference on Ukraine, which the Western alliance is holding on June 15-16 in Switzerland. This is the last signal that the conference will not turn into anything more than shaking the air, a political formality”, writes Pushkov.
According to him, the United States has actually already recognized this, given that in the absence of the leaders of China, Brazil, India, South Africa and other countries, the conference will not fulfill its task. For this reason, President Joe Biden is not scheduled to attend the summit.
„The presence of Kamala Harris from the United States (Vice President – ed.) means nothing both in the non-Western and in the Western world, it is not a secret to anyone”, concluded the senator.
A conference on Ukraine will be held in Switzerland on June 15-16 near the city of Lucerne. Representatives of about 160 countries, excluding Russia, were invited to the meeting. The Kremlin stated that the search for options for exiting the situation in the Ukrainian conflict without the participation of Moscow is “absolutely illogical, useless and practically a waste of time”.
